Case Study: Enhancing Addiction Studies Education at Minnesota North College

  • Organization: Minnesota North College
  • Location: Virginia, Minnesota
  • Department: Addiction Studies
  • Leader: Mary Kay Reindeau, LADC, LSW, MSW – Human Services & Addiction Studies Department Head

The Addiction Studies program at Minnesota North College prepares students for careers in substance use disorder treatment and behavioral health services. As part of its curriculum, the program incorporates electronic documentation and digital records into the learning experience, helping students develop practical skills they can apply in professional settings.

To support faculty, students, and evolving state documentation requirements, the department needed a technology partner that could provide responsive support, customizable forms based on 245G Minnesota state statutes, and a platform tailored to its educational objectives. When existing support challenges began creating obstacles for the program, the department sought a solution that would better align with its needs. That search led to MedEZ®.

The Challenges:

The Addiction Studies program relied on an academic EHR platform to support student learning and documentation training. Over time, however, obtaining technical assistance and making necessary updates became increasingly difficult.

Faculty needed support when questions arose, students required assistance navigating the system, and ongoing changing state requirements created a need for updated forms and documentation. Without a responsive partner, managing these changes became time-consuming and less helpful.  In addition, contact with the EHR platform used ceased to exist. Although the digital program was usable, it was outdated, with no response from the agency, and it became obsolete.

The department needed a solution that would provide:

  • Reliable support for faculty and students
  • Timely updates to forms and documentation
  • Flexibility to accommodate changing requirements per semester
  • A partner invested in the program’s long-term success

Customer Story: Finding a better way.

The Addiction Studies Department at Minnesota North College in Virginia, Minnesota, is pleased to offer a strong recommendation for MedEZ as an academic Electronic Health Record (EHR) platform for educational programs in addiction studies, co-occurring disorders, and mental health. The platform effectively supports instruction in assessment, case management, person-centered care, and treatment services.

When our department first reached out to MedEZ, we were facing a significant challenge in finding a reliable digital file system to train our students. Our previous academic EHR had become unresponsive to the evolving needs of our program and students, despite being marketed specifically for educational institutions. We contacted three EHR vendors, and MedEZ was the only company to respond—doing so within 24 hours. Notably, the other two companies, including the one we were using at the time, never replied to our inquiry.

We were quickly connected with the sales team, who initiated positive and consistent communication with our department. Although MedEZ primarily served agencies and treatment providers, its team demonstrated a genuine willingness to partner with an educational institution. They were especially mindful of our small college environment and limited resources. Because students are responsible for paying for the digital file system, keeping costs reasonable was an essential consideration, and MedEZ was responsive to that need.

Due to their attentiveness, responsiveness, and collaborative approach, the Addiction Studies Department adopted MedEZ to support instruction aligned with Minnesota 245G requirements. Our experience has been exceptionally positive. From the outset, the MedEZ team demonstrated a clear commitment to understanding the unique needs of our program. They worked closely with faculty and staff to ensure a thoughtful and effective implementation process that aligned with both our curriculum and regulatory standards.

A key strength of MedEZ is the level of support provided during onboarding and beyond. Their team offered hands-on assistance, collaborated directly with instructors, and ensured that students were well-oriented to the platform. Students consistently report that they appreciate the ease of use of the system, which allows them to focus on developing documentation and clinical skills rather than navigating complicated technology. They also value the availability of personalized support and the quick, responsive communication from the MedEZ team whenever questions arise.

Most notably,  MedEZ partnered with our department to develop and refine documentation forms tailored specifically to our teaching objectives. These customized forms are aligned with Minnesota Statutes, particularly 245G requirements, ensuring that students gain practical experience using documentation standards they will encounter in professional practice. This alignment meaningfully bridges classroom instruction with real-world application, supporting both instructional and administrative needs.

Overall, MedEZ has proven to be a highly responsive, collaborative, and adaptable partner. Their commitment to continuous improvement, excellent customer service, and student-centered support has had a meaningful impact on the quality of our program and on student learning outcomes.

We highly recommend MedEZ to any academic institution seeking a comprehensive, flexible, and supportive EHR solution for behavioral health and addiction services education. “

What This Means for Behavioral Health Education

Behavioral health education is evolving. Employers increasingly expect graduates to be familiar with electronic documentation, and in Minnesota, digital workflows and compliance-focused recordkeeping are state-mandated requirements from day one. Academic programs need technology partners that understand the unique requirements of higher education, not just healthcare.

By combining curriculum-focused customization, responsive support, and real-world documentation tools, MedEZ® helps educational programs create learning environments that better prepare students for professional practice while reducing the administrative burden on faculty.

As behavioral health programs operate under different state regulations, documentation standards, and reporting requirements, flexibility becomes essential. MedEZ’s ability to customize workflows, forms, and compliance processes enables institutions to create learning environments that reflect real-world expectations in their region. By supporting both educational objectives and state-specific requirements,

MedEZ® helps programs prepare graduates who are better equipped to meet the demands of today’s behavioral health workforce, wherever they choose to practice.
